Ross Woodworth
Master's of Product Development at Carnegie Mellon University
My first memory of interest in design is of a 1999 ABC's Nightline special in which a shopping cart was redesigned in five days by IDEO. In fourth grade, this was one of the first signs to me that I wanted to create and interact with design. It was around then that I began to scrutinize the human factor in everything around me. Having always favored Math and Science, my Mechanical Engineering degree had been an ambition for almost ten years. I know that I possess the required knowledge and skills to succeed, but more importantly my confidence in, familiarity with, and passion for the process of design will allow me to apply that knowledge in order to succeed in any project. I love the innovation process and have grown to be very adept at the process of how you design stuff. Eclectic, creative teams working in focused chaos, fostering enlightened trial and error, allowing teams to fail often to succeed sooner seems to me and those who know me well to be the perfect application of my skill set and personality. In Boulder, I took a course with 2001 IDEO fellow, Larry Carlson. He designed Invention and Innovation (GEEN 3400) based on his experience at IDEO. The semester-long project had teams of five invent and develop a product through the entire design cycle. This taught me the value of failure, how to navigate group dynamics, how to lead, and how to listen to build off of the ideas and insights of others. My project (the WARPSTRide) is detailed on my Portfolio site: www.rossawoodworth.info. After graduation, I spent a year in Breckenridge, Colorado teaching skiing and snowboarding. During that time, I also sought out many innovative startups in the industry. Working Carnegie Mellon's MPD program < http://www.cmu.edu/mpd/ > is at the intersection of Design, Engineering, and Business. It has been the perfect fit for me. I cannot wait to apply what I have learned here to create great products. I am available for telephone interviews and travel immediately.

Hardware Engineering Intern at Ericsson
May 2010 - May 2011
As my first experience, the real-world, high-end engineering, working at the primary US R&D location for the most dominant telecom company in the world has so far provided me with invaluable experience and exposure. It has been fast-paced problem solving both in teams and on my own since day one. I will be working there approximately sixteen hours a week throughout the spring semester.
Digital Explorations Team at University of Colorado at Boulder
February 2010 - May 2010
The Digital Explorations Team is designing, writing, and implementing a series of interactive Flash- animated simulations of basic and essential engineering, math, and science fundamentals. They will be used as the curriculum of a summer program at the University of Colorado for incoming freshman. The goal is to attract a wider variety of people to the Engineering School.
Engineering Intern at Boulder Indoor Cycling
May 2008 - August 2008
As the only engineer (and English speaker) on site, I translated between the Argentinean owner and contractors during the construction process. Also performed data analysis and manipulation using Excel, manual drafting of velodrome design, and installation of the indoor bike racetrack. This is now one of only two indoor velodromes in the United States.
